Point. Interesting fossilized marine life and lime stone.
Large cave under lighthouse. Reef diving 9-18m. Good photography.
24)Flat
Point. Extensive inshore reef area. Good giving areas - Kaha
Rocks Caledonia Reef and California Reef. Beach access. Good
crayfish and paua, blue cod etc.
25)Palliser
Bay Area. 2hrs from Masterton/Wellington. D'Urville and Canterbury
currents influence Cape Palliser. Palliser Bay has various
dive spots, rocky access. Seal colony on Fisherman's Rock
- rocky with extensive kelp forests. Numerous reefs just offshore.
10-40m deep. Weed to sheer drop-offs. Spectacular fish life.
Closer to Wellington and road access through Waimuiomata:
Turakirae Head to Pencarrow Head - whole coast good snorkeling.
Best areas: Pencarrow Lighthouse, Baring Head, Hobart Rock,
Turakirae. Good boat diving. Wrecks and good photography.
V 6-18m.
26)Makara
Beach. Road 18km Wellington access by sea from Paremata. Excellent
inshore reefs to north of beach. Pipinui Point - 1-25m deep.
Visibility average. Large boulders, weed, schooling fish,
spectacular.
27)Pukerua
Bay. One of Wellington's best dive spots south of the bay.
Wairaka Point is the most popular V 6-12 meters.
28)Kapiti
Island Marine Reserve. 7 km from Paraparaumu it was established
as a marine reserve in 1992 which now makes this one of Wellington's
prettiest dive sites. Wonderful for photographers it is home
to a host of sponges some of them rare.
